Hawaii-2017-03 experiment with new MOBYrefresh - Andor Camera 20476

Some testing to make sure the camera is working after arriving in Hawaii in a shipping box that left the camera loose and able to move about somewhat. Also looking for hot pixels.

Problems seen (and solved) and good things:
  1. Temperature control and individual spikes and "permanent" spikes. Def: individual spikes - these are random spikes that do not appear in the same place in the 7 data sets collected to look for spikes. "Permanent" spikes/pixels - show up in the same place for all 7 files but when the camera temp control is on. See the "Hot" pixel pages below for how I find a spike. Also I am calling a "hot" pixel a "permanent" pixel that shows up when the camera's temp control is off. I have not came up with and algo to look for white/black pixels. Probably need real definitions of these things as some point.
    1. Day 1 Page num 2.02 - Backgrounds, temp control on (-60C) = there are no "Permanent" pixels. At low int times there where no spikes. As int time increased the number of individual spikes increased. No int time repeats
    2. Day 2 Page num 3.01 - Backgrounds, temp control off = There where "hot" pixels and there where more hot pixels as the int time increased. 7 repeats at each int time, 3 int times
    3. Day 2 Page num 3.03 - Darks, temp control off = There where "hot" pixels and there where more hot pixels as the int time increased. Many are the same as the Background ones but there where some new ones too. 7 repeats at each int time, 3 int times
    4. Day 2 Page num 3.02 - Backgrounds, temp control on (-20C) = there are no "Permanent" spikes or individual spikes, all taken at the same int time. Low int time of 0.3 sec.

EMAIL from Mike on camera shipping

Hi Mark,
Well, whilst opening the box I felt something clunking around inside. It looks like they shipped the camera in an over-sized foam packing-piece such that the camera could move aboot somewhat

<attached: 2017-03-23_CCD20476_shipping_7=old-packaging.JPG>

The System Performance Booklet lists this camera with a different
Model# = DU934P-BR-DD-9XT
- all of our other cameras do not have the "-9XT".

The SPB lists no pixels for "White/Black Spots", nor "Hot Spots".

And, I noticed this camera has a different
Hardware Headboard Version#
- but so do a few other cameras

I'll send the photos and the SPB scan to SF.

DAY 1 EMAIL from Mike

Hi Steps,
I added one more photo to /ftp1/Mike/CCD-20476,
2017-03-23_CCD20476_shipping_1a.JPG
of the shipping label for the new Andor camera
...since it came from the UK...

And, I took some test data with 20476 = bare shutter today,
/ftp1/Mike/HI-2017-03
only 1x sig,drk,bac @ 0.1 sec via Oriel incandescent + gray plaque
...it was hard to get a dim enough light to be on scale...
then 6x more bac scans @ 1, 10, 30, 60, 90, 120 sec exposure,
all at -60 deg C TEC.  There are 1.5x log sheet(s) + 4x photos.

Maybe there will be some indication of hot/cold pixels?
I did see what looked to be noisy pixels at the long exposure times...

Cheers, MF

DAY 2 EMAIL from Mike

HI Steph,
I collected some more HI-2017-03 data via CCD-20476 bare shutter!
This camera refuses to start up without turning on the TEC @ -41 deg C -
berry curious that behaviour (almost like someone does not want us
to run this camera with the TEC off...).

So, I took some time to let the camera un-cool before taking scans.
First was one triple sig, drk, bac set @ 0.1 sec with 7x scans each.
Next was a double bac,drk set @ 1 sec w/ 7x each,
and another double drk,bac set @ 2 sec w/ 7x each -
I couldn't get a light source dim enough for sig @ 1 nor 2 sec.
With the TEC = off, 3 sec exposure bac/drk was saturating.

Next I set the TEC for -20 deg C and waited for equi-cool-ium.
A triple sig,drk,bac set @ 0.3 sec w/ 7x each was scanned.

I did not see any sign of spiking.  I'm curious what you see.
Aloha, MF
