CRUISE DATES LOCATION
MOBY-L70 04-Jul-2001 - 06-Jul-2001 Lanai
Description: MOBY, LMOB, CIMEL maintenance via HRA: Yarbrough, Houlihan, Feinholz, and Captain Juarez installed the upgraded controller on LMOB201 and performed routine maintenance on the Lanai CIMEL instrument on the 4th of July. That evening, Terry successfully contacted the controller via cellular telephone and verified that all instrumentation was operating correctly. SCUBA diver Kai joined the crew on the 5th during two sets each Eu, Ed and Lu before-cleaning diver reference lamp scan-sets on MOBY217. Neil dove withSteve on the 6th for MOBY collector cleaning and after-cleaning diver reference lamp scans: two sets of Eu / Ed and one set of Lu were completed before increasing winds prevented acquisition of a second set of Lu data. It is noted that during this trip up to three large oceanic white tip sharks were present at almost all times and became increasingly more aggressive each day. The second divers primary responsibility was to watch the back of the working diver - in fact, in the afternoon of the third day Neil had to use a boat pole to dissuade one shark that approached the divers too closely. Although sharks have been encountered at the MOBY site in the past, they have never before been quite this persistent or troublesome. If this behavior continues, procedural changes may have to be made to ensure the safety of the science divers.
