Day 1, Nick, Steve and Terry, arrived on station at ~0930 HST in fairly high winds and bumpy conditions with low currents observed. We discovered that the tether had wrapped itself around the spar and that the end of the tether closest to the spar buoy seems to hang almost vertical under any slack conditions which could contribute to the fouling problem. The tether was unwrapped and the dirty calibrations were started. Photos were also taken. The .CAL files from the last buoy cleaning trip to Maui, MOBY-L176, are on the ftp space, /pub/incoming/terry/M244. I also transferred the session and capture files.

There are some problems that need to be corrected in the files:
09111019.CAL
  • There are four BOTLU scans, the lamp was not on the collector by the time the scans started so the first scan may be suspect and discarded.
  • The three MIDLU scans should be good.
  • The TOPLU scans were not collected due to deteriorating sea conditions.
09111021.CAL
  • The winds backed off after about 45 minutes so the calibrations were started again with a BOTLU set followed immediately by a MIDLU and then a TOPLU. The lamp and battery were changed and a set of BOT, MID and TOP EDs were scanned. 09111022.CAL
  • The battery and lamp were changed again so another complete set of LUs were collected.

Day 2, the same crew as Day 1 and we arrived on station at ~0930 with clear skies, light winds and low current. The collectors were cleaned and the calibrations started.

09111119.CAL
  • A BOTED command was mistakenly entered even though the lamp was placed on the LU collector. The initial BOTED scan can be discarded and good data should start with the first BOTLU scan. A complete set of LU scans were collected and the package was returned to the boat and the battery was replaced. 09111120.CAL
  • Another three depth set of LUs were collected. There is a fourth TOPLU scan on this second set of LUs that should be discarded, an N was entered instead of a Y to shutdown the program. The battery and lamp were exchanged and the EDs were collected, one complete set of three depths.
09111121.CAL
  • The second set of EDs were collected. When the calibration package was returned to the boat for the last time it was discovered that the lamp had malfunctioned and was not on. The package had taken some abuse through the cruise and it appeared the cables were compromised. The final set of TOPEDs may be suspect.
