PURPOSE OF EXPEDITION:

Collect calibration and validation data in Case 2 waters for EO-1, MODIS-Aqua, MODIS-Terra, and SeaWiFS.

EXPEDITION SUMMARY:

Bio-optical data were successfully collected on ten of the scheduled 14 ship days.  Inclement weather caused the cancellation of ship operations for the other four days.  Two vessels were used as water sampling platforms.  The M/V Lady Bug was used to collect data in and around the Chesapeake Bay, and the M/V Kayot was used in the Magothy River and in Mill Creek.

Bio-optical data sets collected on the M/V Lady Bug included MOS/ROV and MicroPro radiance and irradiance measurements, CTD profiles, AC9 beam attenuation and CDOM measurements, and fluorescence.  Discrete water samples were collected for CDOM, particulate/detrital absorption, pigments, TSM, and POC analyses.

Specialized instrument shadowing experiments using the FOS and MD5 systems were performed on the M/V Kayot.   Both of the these systems were also used to collect radiance and irradiance measurements.  Discrete water samples for CDOM, particulate/detrital absorption, pigments, TSM, and POC analyses were collected aboard the Kayot as well.
