Hawaii-2015-01 experiment with new MOBYrefresh blue Resonon - BS01 cfg001

Inital Email from Mark: Ken woud like us to focus as soon as possible on getting some stray light data on the new MOBY refresh blue spec. We will use the New Blue spec, Shutter mechanism from the shadowing work and the canned software for the new ANDOR camera. The focus is on determining if the performance at 350 nm is usable.

First laser date set collected on 7 Apr 2015 by Mike, Below are some of the more important bits of info from Mikes email

I am running the OTS "Andor SOLIS" acquisition software

Signal scans = s*.fits = lite data.
Dark scans = d*.fits = no Ekspla light to the sphere.
Background scans = b*.fits.

The SOLIS software has a "Background" scan mode, which I haven't found much description of, but a Background scan definitely does NOT fire the shutter, so hopefully it's timing is the same as if the shutter was being used. I am wondering if Bac == Dark ? As a test, with all lights off I collected 5x Background scans (b*t1..5.fits) then collected 5x Dark scans (d*t1..5.fits), all at 10 sec exposure ... to compare. My quick-look via MATLAB seems to show these differ by ± 200 ADU.

I took sig,dark,bac scans tonight of Ekspla laser lines, at different exposure times, so it will be interesting to see how dark compares w/ bac.  If they are the "same" then it would be much easier to skip darks and only take backgrounds.

Problems seen:

  1. Large between track values. See Page Num 2.02
  2. Shoulders on the right side of tracks. See day 1 page num 2.03
  3. Large 2nd order bump on the 350 nm laser data, around 680 nm. See Page Num 2.04
  4. Off CCD light for laser data at 320-340 nm, See Page Num 5.04
  5. Saturation happened on gain 1 WAY to low
    1. Solution: Use higher gains. I think Mike is using Gain 4 now. See page Num 4.01
  6. There where some features on the darks when looking at the image. See day 1 data Page number 2.01, figure at the bottom
  7. Saddle shape may not be stable?? See Page Num 5.02, data set is very limited so it's hard to make conclusion
  8. And infrared artifact was found. See Page Num 6.03 and 6.04

Spec was sent back to Resonon, and the focus and other things where improved - Hawaii-2015-03 shows that data

Good stuff:

  1. Darks appear stable and are working as we would expect
  2. Wavelength Cal looked pretty good
