First in-water data set with MOBY installed in MOBY261 July 2016 and deployed 16 Aug 2016. Intially all the data looked really wierd and satrated. But after some fiddling with settings Art and Ken go some usable data from the BS02 spec, see Day 4. During a 22 Sep telcon Art and Ken mentioned that when they tried to do a gain of 4 which is the gain we would prefer to use the linux program would not save a usable file but when using the PC the files saved where fine. The problem seemed to be caused by any values at the 65K saturation level which caused the linux program to save an un-usable file. But we can get good data using the Gain 2 setting and do some in-water testing. Carol put together a good list of tests to do.
DARK/BACKGROUND NOTE: For this MOBY261 data sets what I am calling Darks where taken with the camera shutter closed and external shutter open. Backgournd files where collected with the camera shutter open and the external shutters closed. Note that this filenaming is backwords to most of the MOBY team's normal understanding of Darks and Backgrounds. But changing this on after day 8 was way too late. So we are leaving the naming for now.

DAY 1 EMAIL from Art and Mark |
Hi Steph, Art will be sending you a few images from the BSG installed on MOBY. I think it is BSG2. The plan is to take some light and dark images at 0.5 sec and 10 sec. The light levels will be low since the spec is just looking at the wall in the warehouse we are in.
The sole purpose of these images is to look at noise level in the images. We want to make sure the Andor CCD is operating on batteries as well as it was previously in the lab.
mark
Hi Steph, fits files for each run are on optilab in mp/bsg_test_160803 hopefully the directory names make sense. numbers 3-20 are with the cooling on. 1,2 are with the cooling program but before turning coolers on. 21+ are with a different acquisition program that does not have the cooler code in it. Hello to all, We have some promising news regarding data from the BSG on M261. Ken and I have been looking at all the possible things we could set on the camera and modifying the code to explicitly set them rather than using the default values. This seems to help with getting reasonable images. Previously I had been setting: In addition to these, we are now setting: Attached are some jpg images of data collected with these settings. the I_list.txt file gives the settings for each one. The line plots are the max value in each column for images 3 and 6 (sorry I should have labeled them better). Basically, the light images look good except that they are saturating at ~30,000 counts rather than 65535. The dark images are all around 300 counts (was that the expected value?). This is with cooling set to -40C. So, making some progress here. Art -- cooling at -40 C Stephanie's file renaming used so the files work with my processing I1D --> d2016092101.fits |
DAY 4 EMAIL from Ken and Art |
Email from Ken I saw those dark things too in Arts images. Will have to ask Art how he took the darkswith just the external track shutters in the shutter blocks closed, but the camera shutter opening, or with the camera shutter closed.. Ken Reply from Art camera shutter closed but external shutters open -- Art Gleason |
DAY 4 EMAIL from Mark and Mike - asking about lights on inside the can with the BS02 |

Marks Answer: The Labjacks have the LEDs removed but there are other small red and green ones on the Shutter board. I don't really know how well the shutter mount is light sealed. This depends on the design of the Resonon camera adaptor. This design does not use the original iKon camera shutter mount parts.
Taking darks with the Ext shutters should work but there will still be leakage on the "light" images- a bias error i guess because of light leaking before and after the internal shutter opens during the "light" acquisition. (the Ext shutters would be open fir lights)
Normally, I think we should use the external shutters for darks in any case. The light and dark signals should then be acquired as light scans. That way both the lights and darks are handled exactly the same inside the camera- the only difference being the state of the Ext shutters to select light/dark inputs.

DAY 4 EMAIL from Carol "in situ characterization B261/BS02" after telcon on testing to do while the spec is in-water |
Hi, I was thinking after yesterday’s telcon about the things we could do for characterization with BS02 in the water. Not to eliminate lab tests, or be as good as, but to learn what we can now. Sure you all are thinking the same & we mentioned some on the phone, but here is a list I came up with

DAY 5 EMAIL from Art |
Hi Steph, We just got some pretty reasonable looking data from M261 BSG. It is in optilab ~/tmp/160927_bsg_tests_m261 Basically, a bunch of scans of just the 3 Lu tracks at different exposure times. The dark files on these were done with the camera shutter (external fiber shutters open the whole time). Art |
DAY 6 EMAIL from Art |
Hi Steph, We were able to get a hopefully useful dataset from the spectrograph on the buoy today. It is in optilab, tmp directory called "161013_bsg_data_m261.zip" There are two datasets in there, under directories I1 and I2 I1) is all bands one at a time, 2x preamp gain, 3 replicates each there are two types of dark images: "dark" is with the camera shutter closed and external shutter open. "darkext" is with the camera shutter open and the external shutters closed Looks OK except for the first few "dark" images, which have an odd striping pattern. I2)is all bands together at the same time, 2x gain. 5x light and 5x dark.. looks good darks in this case are with the internal shutter closed and external shutters open. There are some garbage images under I3 that were at 4x gain also, I would ignore those. Art I_list.txt ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) ./asg_batch_acquire2 -a -c -40 -n 3 test_data all bands, 2x preamp gain, 3 replicates Looks OK 2) cooler program, 2x all shutters open. 5x light and 5x dark.. looks good 3) exact same as #2 but at 4x Stephanies file renaming (again) I1 directory new files names 01 I01dark00.fits d2016101301.fits

DAY4-6 EMAIL from Art - reply to Carol questions |
Hi Carol, I started this before I saw Steph and Ken's replies. In general I'd agree with Ken that we may learn more looking at the new data at 20Z that are coming in this week. Nevertheless, a guess at some answers: why is the dark level on day 4 about an order of magnitude less than the other two days? Not positive but it may be due to the preamp gain setting? Day cooler preamp 4 -40 C 1x 5 -999 4x (was set to -40 C but never stabilized) 6 -40 C 2x (first 3 were at -999 before temp stabilized) Why did day 5 never stabilize in temperature, always reading 999? I don't know. Desired temperature was -40 C. On this day, I watched it cool to -42 C then started acquisition, without waiting for it to stabilize. It seems to have not stabilized ever in this case, but temperatures were in the -40 C range. Why do the teeny tiny light leaks on the two tracks only show up in a few day 5 images? They show up in a few of the day 4 images as well, it seems (figs 1,4)? But I am not sure why in either case. Finally, is the order of integration time values on each day such that the camera is continuing to stabilize in temperature during the data series? The call to poll the camera returns the actual temperature and a flag whether or not the temperature has stabilized. For all of these datasets (days 4,5,6) we just looked at the temperature and if it was <= the target temperature (which was -40 C) then I started the data acquisition, so yes the temps were continuing to stabilize during the data series. For the new data that we are now collecting (starting with last Friday 10/28) the program will wait until the stabilize flag is set before proceeding. (Although there is max period of 15 mins that it will wait - it will proceed after 15 mins of cooling regardless if the stable flag is set or not). -- Art Gleason |
DAY 7 EMAIL from Art |
Hi Steph, I'm starting to get data now from the BSG. I'm putting it in optilab under current/data/bsg/all The files are timestamped yyyymmdd_hhmmss.fits the pattern of collection is: Do this pattern once with just Lu then once with all tracks. right now there is just a test run from last friday at 17 Z and a run from today at 20Z. Hopefully, it will start uploading a set each day from the 20Z acquisition. This is all preliminary with the file names/formats etc... so it will evolve (eventually to hdf as we discussed) so let me know how it goes on your end. Art -- Art Gleason

DAY 7-8 EMAIL from Ken |
We should probably concentrate on the data that was taken yesterday (and are going to be taken every day now) at the 20 hr collection. In that data the camera thinks it has been stabilized (yesterday at -40C, today Art is working to get it set at -60C for today and beyond) and there is a specific routine that it will follow. The sequence for this data will be:
3 with external shutters closed 3 with external shutters open, internal closed 5 light 3 with external shutters open, internal closed 3 with external shutters closed The first round will be with the Lu channels open, while the second will be with all tracks open. These are all taken at gain 2, but even then the integration times are pretty shortbut with this data I think we could start:
By comparing the average of the light tracks with the Lutop (and similarly with Esmaybe Ed’s) with 20hr MOS measurements we should be able to get a rough calibration of the specignoring SLC for now(maybe below 600 nm to avoid 2nd order?).

DAY 12 EMAIL from Art - divercals |
Hi Steph, I put the bsg cal in optilab ~/tmp/161110_m261_bsg_cal.zip 5 light, 5 dark, 5 light, 5 dark for each arm. I_list.txt describes it. Art I_list.txt listing I1: Lu bottom arm I2: Lu middle arm I3: Lu upper arm File renaming scheme: I1D01\image.fits d2016111001.fits |
DAY 17 EMAIL from Art - divercals |
Hi Steph, The bsg diver cal from the second day (Nov 11) is now in optilab ~/tmp/161111_m261_bsg_cal.zip Same format as the first day 5 light, 5 dark, 5 light, 5 dark for each arm. I1 = bottom I2 = mid I3 = top They are numbered from 11-20 since day 1 was 1-10. Art File renaming scheme: I1D11\image.fits d2016111101.fits |
DAY 56-57 EMAIL from Art - divercals |
Hi Steph, BSG diver cals are on optilab in current/data/bsg/170116_m261_bsg_cal.zip and current/data/bsg/170117_m261_bsg_cal.zip The directories in there share the same structure as the last set from Nov 10/11. Namely I1* for Lubottom I2* for Lumid. There is no I3 for Lutop because it was damaged. For both arms we did 5 light, 5 dark, 5 light, 5 dark in that order. So *L01-L05 then *D01-D05 then *L06-L10 then *D06-D10 on the first day, then 11-20 on the next day. Cooler set to -60 C pre-amp gain at 2x shutter speed 0.1 second for all Terry is doing the MOS cals now. I hope it will all shut down ok today so we can still get the regular datasets... we'll see. It booted better today so maybe that is a good sign. Art Day 56 I1D01\image.fits d2017011601.fits |
